Swimming with Jellyfish – a Pacific Northwest mermaid tale.
Some time ago I was snorkeling at Cape Palmerston, on the northwest tip of Vancouver Island. I was swimming close to shore, watching the marine plants ebb and flow with the current and observing some rockfish. Suddenly I was surrounded by a massive school of clear, tiny jellyfish that I believe were baby moon jellyfish. I stopped swimming and floated, dazzled by the translucent creatures drifting past. Finding myself amongst thousands of this simple, yet fascinating species that some believe have been on earth for millions of years was a humbling and breathtaking experience. To express the wonderment of the event I chose to depict this luminous encounter using a west coast mermaid-like creature, with elements of the inuit sea goddess Sedna and the Scottish Selkie, a supernatural being with seal and human qualities. My mermaid wears a warm hooded jacket to insulate her from the cool North Pacific Ocean and I have given her gills so she can breathe underwater – a recurring dream of mine.
Original, limited edition of 50 12″ x 9″ print on 15″ x 11″ paper. This can be framed in a standard 11″ x 14″ frame, or 12″ x 16″ or 16″ x 20″ frame with an 11″ x 14″ cutout.
Linocut is a printmaking technique, similar to woodcut. A design is cut into a piece of linoleum with sharp knives and chisels. Ink is rolled over the linoleum surface and then press onto paper. Printing can be done by hand or with a press.
